Serra, Narcís

Serra, Narcís
b. 1943, Barcelona
   Politician
Narcis Serra was active in opposition politics during the Franco regime. He quickly rose to power in the ranks of the socialist PSOE. He was elected Mayor of Barcelona in the late 1970s, and, to the surprise of many observers, became Defence Minister in the first González government in 1982. He rose to the position of Vice-President of the Spanish Government in 1991, but lost popularity thereafter as the ruling party became tainted by corruption. Again to the surprise of some observers, Serra was re-elected in the 1996 general elections.
